Students who are in their
first year of medical studies are eligible to apply for an eight-week
internship in clinical nutrition that will be completed during the
summer between their first and second year. The purpose of this
program is to increase the role of nutrition in the practice of
medicine, medical research, health promotion, and disease prevention
by providing a unique combination of educational experiences to
medical students. This is a national program sponsored by the American
Society for Clinical Nutrition (ASCN) and the American Medical Student
Association (AMSA). Each medical student who is accepted can choose
from an approved list of medical schools and faculty mentors; a
stipend is awarded to each student to help with travel, housing,
or other expenses.
A UT-Houston medical
student was accepted and completed the internship during the summer
of 1999; our school hosted a medical student from another medical
school for the internship during the summer of 2000. Students have
a choice between specializing in one area of clinical nutrition,
e.g. nutrition and cancer, or rotating through several areas including
diabetes, cardiovascular disease, renal transplant, critical care
nutrition support, geriatrics, and the Hermann Hospital Wellness
Center.
